Makassar soccer fans head to Jakarta
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Some 6,000 supporters of South
Sulawesi's soccer team left for Jakarta on Sunday morning for a
soccer match, after running amok at a port.
State-owned shipping company PT Pelni attempted to delay the
Ceremai's docking at Makassar Port because thousands of people
without tickets were waiting to board the ship.
However, after 12 hours of waiting, the supporters ran amok
and forced their way onto the ship, with only 1,000 of them
having tickets.
Five men were reportedly injured in the melee. The local
police arrested 13 people for their part in the violence.
An employee at Makassar Port expressed concern because the
vessel was now carrying about 10,000 people, far above its
capacity.
The employee said the ship only had 2,500 bunks for the 10,000
people.--JP
