PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has recorded continuous growth in the performance of the Makassar–Parepare train route, serving 145,735 passengers from January to May 2026, representing a 25.48 per cent increase compared to the same period the previous year.

“Throughout January to May 2026, the Makassar-Parepare train served 145,735 passengers, an increase of 25.48 per cent compared to the same period in 2025, which reached 116,146 passengers,” stated Anne Purba, Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday.

She noted that the increase in passenger numbers has become increasingly consistent in 2026, with May recording the highest passenger volume this year at 35,442 passengers. This figure has contributed to a total of 825,512 passengers on the Makassar-Parepare line since the service commenced operations on 29 October 2022 up until 1 June 2026.

“This growth in passengers demonstrates that the public is increasingly utilising the train as a preferred travel option,” she said. According to Purba, the presence of the Makassar-Parepare train also strengthens inter-regional connectivity and supports public mobility towards various activity centres within the region.

Anne mentioned that the Makassar-Parepare train currently serves a route approximately 145 kilometres long, connecting several strategic areas in South Sulawesi via Mandai, Maros, Rammung-Rammang, Pangkajene, Labakkang, Ma’rang, Mandalle, Tanete Rilau, Barru, and Garongkong stations.
