Makassar - The Mayor of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Munafri Arifuddin, hopes that the National Strategic Project (PSN) for Waste Processing into Electricity (PSEL) will soon be realised to resolve waste management issues.

“May this become a beneficial investment, capable of solving the waste problem, while also providing positive impacts for the City of Makassar and its residents,” he stated through a press release received in Makassar on Wednesday.

After attending a Limited Coordination Meeting (Rakortas) with Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs (Menko Pangan) Zulkifli Hasan, Munafri Arifuddin said the meeting was part of the process to realise the project.

He explained that the acceleration of PSN is a direct instruction from President Prabowo Subianto, so that the PSEL project can proceed more quickly and extensively in 33 locations across Indonesia, including Makassar. This is to address waste emergencies, particularly in areas with accumulations exceeding 1,000 tonnes per day.

“In the meeting, it was conveyed that the President is giving special attention so that several PSN projects can be realised,” he said.

One proposed step is the optimisation of land in the Antang Final Disposal Site (TPA) area, Manggala Subdistrict, which is already available.

According to him, building the PSEL within the Antang TPA complex is more efficient because it does not require relocating waste to a new site, which could burden the Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBD).

Furthermore, Munafri continued, placing the PSEL at the Antang TPA site, which has long been Makassar’s TPA, is also considered safer socially because it minimises environmental impacts on new residential areas.

He added that the project location at Antang TPA is in a zone that allows for the construction of supporting industrial facilities for PSEL. If agreed upon, the Makassar City Government only needs to complete the land acquisition process.
