JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian stated that recovery efforts in flood-affected areas of Sumatra continue to show positive progress. According to data as of 24 May 2026, the majority of affected regions across three provinces have now returned to normal. Additionally, all displaced persons have been confirmed to no longer reside in temporary shelters but have moved into temporary housing (huntara) or are utilising the Temporary Housing Fund (DTH). He detailed that in North Sumatra Province, 16 out of 19 affected regencies and cities have returned to normal. In Aceh Province, 10 out of 18 affected regencies and cities have returned to normal. For Gayo Lues, conditions are nearly normal, while seven areas requiring attention include Aceh Tamiang, East Aceh, North Aceh, Bireuen, Pidie Jaya, Central Aceh, and Bener Meriah. Tito further explained that regional assessments are based on key indicators such as government operations, healthcare services, educational activities, road access, and the functionality of basic services and community economic activities. He emphasised the importance of budgetary support to expedite recovery in disaster-affected areas, stating that financial assistance from both central and local governments would greatly aid rehabilitation and reconstruction, including addressing ongoing needs. ‘The TKD for these disaster-affected areas should not be reduced and, if necessary, increased, as they will still need to manage significant residual issues,’ he stressed.
