Major Fire Hits Military Base, Killing Seven
Seven people were killed in a major fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday (17 October 2026), local time. CBC News reported the death toll based on an anonymous source.
Canadian authorities have confirmed fatalities and injuries but have not announced the exact number of casualties. National Defence Minister David McGuinty described the fire as a “terrible” incident and said he planned to visit the site to receive an update.
“I can’t remember anything like this happening in the recent past,” McGuinty said, according to a report on Monday (19 October 2026).
The fire was reported at about 4pm local time on Saturday in the base’s training area. The incident occurred as the region was experiencing strong winds of up to 96 kilometres per hour, raising the risk of the flames spreading rapidly.
The fire also prompted a medical emergency response in Edmonton. Media reports said health staff in the city activated “Code Orange”, indicating a mass-casualty incident, to co-ordinate the treatment of patients transferred from Wainwright.
Canada’s prime minister also expressed concern on social media. “Our prayers are with all the brave men and women affected,” the prime minister wrote.
CFB Wainwright is one of Canada’s major military bases and is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, a facility used for various army training exercises. According to 2021 census data, 1,310 military and civilian personnel were stationed at the base.
The Municipality of Wainwright, which has a population of about 6,600, said the fire had crossed the base fence and spread into the surrounding area. However, no evacuation order had been issued by local authorities at the time of the report.
