Major fire at Jiung Market in Kemayoran spreads to nearby homes
A major fire broke out at a residential area in Jiung Market, specifically at Jalan Kemayoran Gempol, RT 02/RW 05, Kebon Kosong Village, Kemayoran Subdistrict, Central Jakarta, on Monday evening.
The incident prompted an immediate response from firefighters, who deployed dozens of vehicles to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.
Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department (Gulkarmat) Chief Bayu Meghantara said the department received the fire report at 8:55 PM WIB. Upon receiving the information, personnel swiftly moved to the location to extinguish the blaze.
‘The fire report was received at 8:55 PM WIB,’ he said.
Initial deployment came from Kemayoran Sector III Office using medium-pressure fire trucks. Given the size of the fire and the risk of spreading to surrounding structures, the number of vehicles and personnel was increased.
A total of 33 combined fire units and around 100 personnel were deployed to the scene. Responders arrived at approximately 9:05 PM WIB and immediately began firefighting operations to control the flames.
The fire’s location near Masjid Jami’ Al Ikhlas drew special attention from firefighters. The dense residential area heightened the risk of the fire spreading, making containment the top priority on the ground.
As of late evening, firefighters were still battling the flames consuming the residential building. The situation remains in the ‘red’ category, meaning firefighting operations are ongoing and the situation has not been fully brought under control.
According to Bayu, the biggest challenge in the operation was preventing the fire from spreading to other nearby homes. Therefore, all personnel focused on creating barriers and cooling down areas at risk of being affected.
Meanwhile, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Firefighters have yet to determine the source as the priority is currently to extinguish the flames and secure the surrounding area.
In addition to the cause, the extent of material damage is still being assessed. A related team will conduct further investigation once the site is safe and firefighting operations are complete.
