Major Fire at Jiung Market in Kemayoran Sparks Panic and Evacuation
A major panic engulfed hundreds of residents and traders due to the spreading fire at Jiung Market in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Monday evening, June 1, 2026. The blaze, which erupted at 8:55 PM WIB, spread rapidly, destroying parts of the market and threatening surrounding residential communities.
The situation at the scene was tense as the fire’s movement proved difficult to control. Residents living near the fire site rushed to evacuate their valuables to safer locations to prevent further spread.
Community-Led Evacuation and Self-Organised Safety Efforts
Similar conditions were observed within the market area. Traders busily cleared their stalls using makeshift tools. Amid the chaos, acts of solidarity emerged as local teenagers worked together to help move traders’ goods.
Jakarta Gulkarmat Response
The Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department (Gulkarmat) deployed significant resources to the scene in a tactical response. On-site officers focused on containing the fire to prevent it from spreading to other low-rise buildings in the densely populated area.
Bayu, a field officer representative, confirmed that the initial report was received by duty personnel at exactly 8:55 PM WIB. An immediate response was launched with assets dispatched from Kemayoran Sector III Office.
The main challenge faced by officers is the extremely dense residential layout, forcing firefighters to act swiftly and tactically due to the high risk of the fire spreading to low-rise structures in the area. As of now, officers continue to battle the blaze.
