Major Explosion in Sumenep: Two Houses Damaged, Three People Injured
A loud explosion rattled residents of Bantelan Village in Batuputih District, Sumenep Regency, East Java, on Thursday morning (5 March). Two houses were damaged as a result of the blast in the eastern tip of Madura Island. One resident, Zuhdi, said the explosion occurred around 06:30 local time (WIB) and immediately caused panic among locals. People who heard the loud bang rushed out of their homes to determine the source of the explosion. “The blast was so powerful that it drove residents outside to see what had happened,” Zuhdi told reporters, as quoted by detikJatim. The blast was heard up to about a five-kilometre radius from the scene. As a result of the explosion, two houses were damaged and three residents were injured. “There are two houses damaged. There are no fatalities, but in terms of injuries there seem to be three people who have been taken to the nearest puskesmas for treatment,” he said. Plt Head of Public Relations of Sumenep Police Resort, Kompol Widiarti, said officers were at the scene to carry out checks and further investigations into the cause of the explosion. “The Police Chief has now headed to the explosion scene in Batuputih,” Widiarti said.
