Major Cities in Indonesia Potential for Rainfall Today

Jakarta, VIVA – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts the potential for light, moderate, to heavy rain, which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, in various major cities across Indonesia today.

BMKG forecaster Bintari explained that, generally, a convergence zone has formed from the Gulf of Thailand to the South China Sea and the northern coast of Papua New Guinea to the North Pacific Ocean of Papua New Guinea. These conditions are capable of increasing the potential for rain cloud growth along the areas traversed by convergence or confluence.

“Therefore, most major cities are predicted to experience cloudy weather to light rain, while rain with moderate to heavy intensity accompanied by lightning is predicted to occur in the Padang region,” she stated, as quoted from the official BMKG website in Jakarta, Saturday, 12 September 2026.

Meanwhile, regions predicted to experience light rain include Banda Aceh, Medan, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Bengkulu, Bandung, Semarang, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Palu, Nabire, and Jayawijaya.

As for major cities predicted to experience cloudy conditions today, these include Pekanbaru, Jakarta, Serang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Gorontalo, Manado, Ambon, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari, and Jayapura.

Previously, on Friday (11/9), BMKG mentioned that several waters in North Sumatra (Sumut) are at risk of being hit by waves as high as four metres due to strong winds from 11 to 14 September 2026.

“Waves as high as four metres could occur in the waters west of the Nias Islands, the waters west of the Batu Islands, and the eastern waters of the Nias Islands,” said BMKG Forecaster at the Class II Maritime Meteorology Station Belawan, Dasmian Sulviani, in Medan, on Friday.

She added that wind shifts in the northern Sumatra region (Sumbagut) and warm sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra could support the formation of convective clouds in the northern Sumatra region.
