The world’s sea surface temperature has just set a record high unseen in the last 125,000 years. The combination of the natural El Niño phenomenon, exacerbated by warming from human activity, has pushed the oceans to a hot point never witnessed in the history of human civilisation.

A Futurism report citing official data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service stated that the global average sea surface temperature reached 21.1 degrees Celsius on 22 August 2026. This figure broke the previous record set only in March 2024.

What is particularly worrying is that the highest ocean temperatures usually occur in March-April, but this time the record was reached in August, which is typically cooler.

Ryan Katz-Rosene from the University of Ottawa warned that current ocean temperatures are most likely the highest of the entire Holocene epoch and could be the warmest since the last interglacial period, 125,000 years ago.

“This should be the world’s headline news,” he stressed.

Samantha Burgess, a lead researcher at Copernicus, stated that this temperature record is a clear signal that the oceans are under increasing pressure. El Niño does add heat, but the temperature spike caused by the phenomenon is occurring on top of decades of warming from human emissions.

The impact of rising ocean temperatures on the Earth’s climate is already evident:

  • The number of marine heatwave days has more than tripled since the early 1990s.

  • Around 42 per cent of the world’s ocean area is currently experiencing a marine heatwave, approaching the record extent of 46 per cent recorded in 2024.

  • Warmer oceans are losing their ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the air, thereby worsening the greenhouse effect.

  • Extreme storms and rainfall are expected to become more frequent and more intense until the end of the year.

Scientists emphasise that the solution has long been known but has not been implemented seriously enough. There are two urgent main steps:

  • First, rapid and drastic reduction of fossil fuel emissions. Without slowing the rate of warming from greenhouse gases, ocean temperatures will continue to rise beyond the limits of living creatures’ ability to adapt.

  • Second, protection of marine and coastal ecosystems. Coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows are natural fortresses that protect coastlines while absorbing carbon. If these ecosystems are damaged, the ocean’s ability to cool itself will be completely lost.

For Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelagic nation, this ocean warming carries multiplied risks. Hot water temperatures can trigger mass coral reef damage, rising sea levels, and stronger storms hitting the coast. At the same time, the El Niño phenomenon exacerbated by global warming prolongs the dry season and expands forest fires within the country.

The ocean is the Earth’s largest climate buffer. If that buffer itself begins to heat to a record high not seen in tens of thousands of years, the warning is very clear: the Earth is changing towards a much hotter direction, and the change is occurring far faster than our ability to adapt.
