A statement of former President Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid
that Megawati Soekarnoputri would be trapped by the New Order
forces in the administration, House of Representatives (DPR) and
People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), should be taken into
account even though Gus Dur himself didn't consistently fight
against corruption and irregularities allegedly committed by
people in the DPR/MPR and their partners in private business
circles.

The biggest challenge facing Megawati and Hamzah Haz will be
the appointment of the right attorney general, a person who will
neither belong to the Golkar Party nor to other major political
parties like the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle and the
United Development Party.

The attorney general to-be, who must be someone with
integrity, must enjoy the support of the National Police and the
Indonesian Military. He or she must be seriously committed to
eradicating corruption based on the right legal procedure. In the
absence of effective enforcement, all legal investigations will
end up simply as a compilation of dossiers.
