Majerle sets 3-pointer season record as Suns beat Spurs
PHOENIX, Arizona (Reuter): Dan Majerle scored 21 points while setting an NBA season record for 3-pointers and Kevin Johnson handed out a team record 25 assists as the Phoenix Suns cruised past the San Antonio Spurs 107-95 on Wednesday.
Majerle made three 3-pointers and has 173 this season, passing Vernon Maxwell's league record of 172 set in 1990-91.
Johnson, who scored 16 points, shattered his own club record of 21 assists set in 1989 against the Lakers.
The 25 assists, which is also an NBA season-high, is five shy of the league mark set by Orlando's Scott Skiles in 1990.
David Robinson pumped in 33 points to lead the Spurs, who have dropped two straight games after winning six in a row.
Charles Barkley added 21 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists for Phoenix, while A.C. Green chipped in 20.
At Los Angeles, James Worthy scored four of his season-high 31 points in overtime, leading the Lakers to a 128-123 win over the visiting Sacramento Kings.
The Lakers have won 12 of their last 16 games and are 5-1 since Magic Johnson took over as head coach.
Johnson did not last the game, however, getting ejected for his second technical foul with 2:12 left in the third quarter. He was arguing a technical foul given to Worthy.
In Atlanta, Danny Manning, back after a three-game absence due to a staph infection in his right elbow, scored 11 of his 23 points during a 13-0 fourth-quarter run and made a big steal on Dino Radja in the final seconds as the Hawks held on for a 111- 107 win over the Boston Celtics.
Kevin Willis had 25 points and 18 rebounds and Mookie Blaylock added 21 points and 11 assists to lead the Hawks, who completed their first season sweep of Boston since 1969-70.
The Central Division-leading Hawks (51-22) moved within a game of New York for best record in the Eastern Conference.
In Charlotte, Alonzo Mourning had 23 points and 11 rebounds and the Hornets shot a franchise-record 65 percent from the field in a 129-90 rout of the Indiana Pacers.
The Hornets kept their playoff hopes alive, moving within five games of New Jersey for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Pacers, who lost for just the second time in six games, dropped into seventh place in the East, a half-game behind Miami.
At Washington, Steve Smith scored eight of his 26 points in a 14-3 third-quarter run as the Miami Heat rallied to beat the Bullets 114-103.
Glen Rice had 21 points and Grant Long netted 17 for Miami, which had five players in double figures.
Mitchell Butler had a career-high 26 points and Rex Chapman and Tom Gugliotta had 19 for the Bullets, who have lost 11 of their last 13 games.
