Majalengka Regency Government trials local garlic variety development

The Majalengka Regency Government, West Java, is trialling the use of local varieties in garlic development to find a type that matches land conditions while also meeting market needs.

Majalengka Regent Eman Suherman said the local variety trial is being conducted in the Nunuk Baru area, Maja District, after the regional government carried out a number of garlic cultivation experiments in several locations.

“For the garlic commodity in Majalengka, we previously conducted a planting trial or demonstration plot in Cikaracak, Argapura District. However, it turned out to be less suitable,” said Eman in Majalengka on Thursday.

According to him, the regional government then developed garlic using local varieties in Nunuk Baru to assess their suitability with the agro-climatic conditions of the area.

However, Eman said the Starmill 99 variety still faces market obstacles because its bulb size is relatively small, making it less accepted by consumers.

“The characteristic of Starmill 99 is that its bulbs are relatively small, so it is less acceptable to the market. But we are not stopping,” he said.

He said the government continues to conduct testing and development in order to find a garlic variety that not only grows well, but also has the size and quality that meets market demand.
