Majalengka Accelerates Garlic Self-Sufficiency, Ministry of Agriculture Demonstration Plots Built in Two Locations
The Majalengka Regency Government is continuing to promote the development of garlic as a commodity, as part of efforts to support the acceleration of national food self-sufficiency. One such initiative is a simultaneous garlic planting programme held in Nunuk Village, Maja District, Majalengka Regency, on Wednesday (19/8/2026). The planting activity is also part of a garlic development movement carried out simultaneously across 17 provinces, strengthening synergy between the central government, regional governments, the Indonesian National Armed Forces and National Police, universities, and farmers in building food independence.
Majalengka Regent Eman Suherman stated that garlic development in Majalengka Regency is not new. The regional government has previously conducted a number of trials to identify the varieties and locations most suited to Majalengka’s agro-climatic conditions. ‘For garlic as a commodity in Majalengka, we previously carried out planting trials or demonstration plots in Cikaracak, Argapura District. However, it turned out to be less suitable,’ said Eman.
According to him, the Majalengka Regency Government subsequently developed garlic cultivation in the Nunuk Baru area using a local variety. The regional government also partnered with Majalengka University to conduct a demonstration plot using the Starmill 99 variety. However, the results of this development still faced challenges in terms of market acceptance. ‘The characteristic of Starmill 99 is that its bulbs are relatively small, so it is less acceptable to the market. But we have not stopped. Trials and further development continue so that we can obtain a suitable variety, both in terms of productivity and market needs,’ he said.
Eman added that in 2026, Majalengka Regency has again received support from the Directorate General of Horticulture of the Ministry of Agriculture to become a location for garlic demonstration plots. The demonstration plots will be carried out in two locations, namely Nunuk Baru Village, Maja District, and Kancana Village, Cikijing District. ‘This year Majalengka will also be a location for garlic demonstration plots from the Directorate General of Horticulture of the Ministry of Agriculture. The locations are in Nunuk Baru and Kancana, Cikijing District,’ he explained.
He expressed hope that cross-sector support, including from the Indonesian National Armed Forces and National Police, can further strengthen garlic development in Majalengka. ‘We hope that with support from the National Police, garlic development in Majalengka can improve further, so that in the future it can contribute to realising national garlic self-sufficiency,’ he said.
