The measure of fiscal success is not merely reflected in deficit figures or debt ratios, but in the ability to maintain developmental continuity and hope for future generations.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Amidst increasing global economic uncertainty, the term ‘sell Indonesia’ has recently become a frequent topic of discussion in financial markets. This term describes the tendency of some investors to reduce their investment exposure to Indonesian assets when risk perceptions rise.

International media outlets, such as Bloomberg, have highlighted this trend, noting a significant decline in the Jakarta Composite Index. This downturn has positioned it as one of the worst-performing stock markets among more than 90 global indices monitored by Bloomberg.

This phenomenon cannot be viewed merely as a temporary market movement. Behind shifting investment decisions lies a deeper message regarding perceptions of economic prospects, policy stability, and a nation’s ability to maintain long-term sustainable development.

In line with this, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has urged investors to examine Indonesia’s economic data more deeply before making investment decisions. The Finance Minister emphasised that the national economic fundamentals currently remain in good condition.

According to the World Bank’s Indonesia Economic Prospects report, the Indonesian economy grew by 4.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2025 and is projected to remain within the 4.8–5 per cent range in the coming years. The World Bank also noted that fiscal discipline, controlled inflation, and adequate financial reserves are key factors maintaining national economic resilience amidst global uncertainty.

However, economic growth alone is insufficient to maintain market confidence. Investors also closely monitor fiscal sustainability, which refers to the government’s ability to meet current developmental needs without compromising the fiscal stability of future generations. In this context, the ‘sell Indonesia’ phenomenon serves as a reminder that fiscal credibility is one of a nation’s most important assets.
