China announced on Sunday that the main structure of the first cross-border cable car connecting it with Russia has been completed, according to local state media reports. The construction of the passenger cable car, which connects Heihe City in the northeast Heilongjiang Province, China, with Blagoveshchensk, Russia, across the Heilongjiang River, began in 2019. The project is targeted for completion before the end of this year, reported Xinhua news agency.

Once operational, the cable car will reduce the travel time across the river between the two border cities to just approximately six to eight minutes, said Cao Xinhong, Chairman of the Heihe-based Jinlonggang Construction, the contractor for the Chinese side of the project. The cable car consists of a 970-metre horizontal river span and is equipped with two passenger cabins. Each cabin can carry up to 110 passengers. The cable car can operate at a maximum speed of 12 metres per second and is designed with a capacity to transport up to 2.6 million passengers per year in one direction.
