Main Construction Begins, Summarecon Mall Makassar Introduces Experience-Based Concept

The retail market outside Java, particularly in Makassar, South Sulawesi, is showing interesting dynamics that are attracting major developers. PT Summarecon Agung Tbk is one of them. Through its business unit, this developer is beginning to establish a foothold by starting the main construction of Summarecon Mall Makassar. The start of this construction marks a shift in development focus to eastern Indonesia, which has long been considered a “sleeping giant” on the national consumption map. The installation of the tower crane signals that foundation work has been fully completed, bringing the project to the main structure phase. Standing on a 10.6-hectare plot of land, this shopping centre adopts a concept different from conventional malls. Summarecon combines indoor and outdoor areas into one unit. This approach is a response to changes in consumer behaviour post-pandemic, who prefer spaces with natural air circulation and green open areas. The concept focuses on creating an integrated spatial experience between commercial areas and lifestyle facilities. Construction, which began in 2025, is projected to become the fifth mall in Summarecon’s portfolio, following their successes in Kelapa Gading, Serpong, Bekasi, and Bandung. Summarecon Director Soegianto Nagaria emphasised that the presence of this mall is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen Makassar’s position as a new growth centre. “We want to promote this area as a hub for business, lifestyle, and national-scale activities in eastern Indonesia,” said Soegianto in a statement received by Kompas.com on Saturday (9/5/2026). Summarecon Mall Makassar will feature various flagship tenants, from supermarkets and cinemas to department stores, as well as The Downtown Walk. This is a feature that has been successful in Summarecon Mall Serpong and Summarecon Mall Bekasi, up to Summarecon Mall Bandung, which is presented as a culinary tourism destination with an Alfresco Dining concept in an outdoor atmosphere accompanied by live music entertainment every day.
