Maidi Sentenced to Five Years in CSR Extortion Case
Surabaya (ANTARA) - Madiun’s suspended Mayor Maidi has been sentenced to five years in prison in a corruption case involving extortion disguised as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds and the acceptance of gratuities within the Madiun City Government.
The panel of judges at the Surabaya Corruption Court also fined Maidi Rp250 million. The verdict was read by presiding judge Ernawati Anwar at a hearing in Surabaya on Thursday.
“The court finds the defendant Maidi legally and convincingly guilty of committing corruption jointly and on a continuing basis,” the judge said when reading the verdict.
The panel ruled that if the fine is not paid, it will be replaced by three months’ imprisonment.
The time Maidi has already spent in detention will be deducted from his sentence, and he was ordered to remain in custody.
Previously, prosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had demanded that Maidi pay Rp8,005,384,790 in compensation, or around Rp8 billion.
The case concerns alleged extortion disguised as CSR funding, as well as the receipt of gratuities linked to several projects within the Madiun City Government, including projects run by the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR) and the Winongo final waste-processing site.
In their sentencing submissions, prosecutors linked the case to a total value of Rp10.7 billion.
