Mahyar Goes Missing While Diving in Lobang River, Simalungun, Found Dead

Mahyar (25) went missing after diving at the Sejuk Natural Swimming Spot on the Lobang River, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra. After a search, the man was found dead at a depth of 10 metres.

The incident began when the victim dived to the riverbed at around 16:00 Western Indonesia Time on Sunday (13/9/2026). However, after the dive, the victim never resurfaced.

“Based on the information received, prior to the incident the victim manually dived to the riverbed with the aim of releasing a buoy rope located at the bottom of the water. However, after several minutes the victim did not return to the surface,” said Hery Marantika, Head of the Class A Medan Search and Rescue Office, quoted by detikSumut on Monday (14/9/2026).

Residents at the location reported the incident to the Basarnas emergency call centre 115. The Lake Toba SAR Post Rescue Team then deployed to the location, arriving at around 21:40 Western Indonesia Time.

The combined SAR team was divided into two Search and Rescue Units (SRU). SRU 1 searched for the victim around the incident site using underwater detection equipment, an aqua eye, and also carried out dives. Meanwhile, SRU 2 combed the land around the incident site down to roughly 100 metres along the river downstream.

Officers faced a number of obstacles during the search, including the considerable depth of the river pools. In addition, the search being conducted at night resulted in limited lighting.

At around 23:40 Western Indonesia Time, the combined SAR team found the victim at the bottom of the river at a depth of approximately 10 metres. Tragically, the victim was found dead.
