Mahathir's new step temporary

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said
yesterday that the move to let non-Malays buy companies owned by
ethnic Malays and other indigenous groups was a temporary
measure, Bernama news agency reported.

Mahathir reportedly said the move, effectively a dilution of
an affirmative action program launched in 1970, was aimed at
helping companies facing problems and that such activities would
be in certain cases only.

Details of Mahathir's remarks were not immediately available.
