Mahathir renews warning on NGOs

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
has warned the government would act against non-governmental
organizations which took part in what it described as an outlawed
meeting on East Timor.

"I would like to clarify the government's stand against the
NGOs. They are ordinary bodies and if they commit wrong, action
will be taken," Mahathir was reported saying by The Sun daily
yesterday.

The country's laws allowed closed-door meetings but Mahathir
said the East Timor conference held in Kuala Lumpur was a public
meeting as it was attended by foreign participants holding
visitors passes as well as journalists.
