Mahathir rebukes Chinese group
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Monday criticized a Chinese educational group for its objections to planned multiracial schools.
The government, which fears the races are becoming too polarized, is planning more "vision schools".
Pupils from all races will share facilities in a common campus but are educated separately in their own languages.
Mahathir, quoted by Bernama news agency, said he was disappointed with the Dong Jiao Zhong's objections to the idea.
He said their objection showed the group, representing boards and teachers' associations of Chinese schools, had never accepted anything about education in Malaysia.
Mahathir said the Chinese, Malays and Indians lived and worked together in Malaysia.
