Mahathir calls for coalition meeting
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir
Mohamad has called for a meeting of the leaders of his ruling
political coalition on Oct. 25, The Star newspaper said on
Thursday.
The meeting of the heads of the Barisan Nasional (National
Front) will be held a day after the coalition holds its 25th
anniversary celebrations, the daily said.
It quoted leaders of the component parties as saying the
agenda of the meeting was not given, but they said that elections
were expected to be the main topic.
Mahathir must call national polls by June 2000, but there have
been wide expectations that elections would be held around the
middle of next month.
