Mahathir called for Anwar trial
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
has been subpoenaed along with the country's top prosecutor to
testify in the sodomy trial of former deputy premier Anwar
Ibrahim, the official Bernama news agency said Wednesday.
Karpal Singh said Mahathir and attorney general Mohtar
Abdullah were subpoenaed to appear as witnesses for the defense.
Mohtar is leading the prosecution team.
Judge Arifin Jaka rejected defense requests on Monday to throw
out the case and ruled that Anwar must enter a defense.
The judge also ruled that Anwar's Indonesian adopted brother
Sukma Darmawan had a case to answer. He and Anwar are charged
with sodomizing Azizan Abu Bakar, the former driver of Anwar's
wife.
