Mahathir advises local Muslims
KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
on Thursday encouraged Malaysian Muslims to practice their
religion in full view of all, so that suspicions and
misconceptions could be avoided.
Mahathir was speaking at the opening of the International
Conference of Religious Studies Meeting the Millennium which is
aimed at promoting peace and creating an understanding between
various religious denominations.
Asia's longest reigning democratically elected leader said
that such steps would avoid undue reactions and allay the false
fears that Malaysia might impose Islam on the non-Muslim
minorities.
Almost 500 delegates from as far afield as Taiwan and Hong
Kong are attending the conference.
