A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck an area near Panama’s southern coast. It was at a depth of 10 kilometres.

AFP and Reuters news agencies reported on Saturday (10 September 2026) that the US Geological Survey (USGS) had revised down its initial estimate of the earthquake’s magnitude from 8.0. There were no reports of damage in Panama, while television footage showed people evacuating buildings.

The US Tsunami Warning System indicated a potential tsunami threat along much of the Pacific coast of Central America, as well as in Colombia and Ecuador.

The earthquake was felt as far as Panama City and the capital of neighbouring Costa Rica.
