Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake in Central Sulawesi: One Fatality Reported in Sigi

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reported that one resident died as a result of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that shook Central Sulawesi on Tuesday (16/6/2026). Sigi Regency was the area most significantly impacted by the damage.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Communication Centre for Disasters, confirmed the fatality based on data collected up to 19.00 WIB. “One resident was reported dead in Sigi Regency. Besides the fatality, data collection shows an increase in the number of affected residents and infrastructure damage in several locations,” Abdul Muhari stated in an official release in Jakarta.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake’s epicentre was on land at coordinates 1.03 South Latitude and 120.24 East Longitude, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was approximately 42 km southeast of Palu City and 54 km northeast of Sigi Regency.

To date, 312 people or 110 families have been affected by the disaster in Central Sulawesi. Preliminary BNPB data indicates that at least 67 housing units sustained damage, with 26 suffering light damage, 6 moderate damage, and 12 severe damage. The majority of the damaged houses are located in Sigi Regency, totalling 47 units.

BMKG also recorded high seismic activity at the location. As of 14.00 WIB, 55 aftershocks had occurred. The public is advised to remain vigilant regarding potential building damage from aftershocks and to avoid structures that are already cracked or unstable.

Rapid response teams from the local disaster management agency (BPBD), together with TNI/Polri personnel, are continuing to assess the situation and provide emergency aid to displaced persons at affected sites.
