Magnitude 6.4 Land Earthquake Shakes Simalungun, North Sumatra

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred in Simalungun, North Sumatra. The epicentre was located on land. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake occurred on Saturday afternoon (15/8/2026) at 17.54 WIB. “There is no tsunami potential,” BMKG stated on its X account @infoBMKG. The epicentre was located at coordinates 2.97 degrees North Latitude and 98.95 degrees East Longitude, approximately 10 km southeast of Simalungun, North Sumatra. The earthquake’s hypocentre was at a depth of 163 km. There have been no reports yet regarding the impact of this earthquake.
