Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Shakes Sangihe Islands in North Sulawesi

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake measuring magnitude 6.2 shook North Sulawesi on Tuesday at 22:49 WIB. The quake’s epicentre was located at sea, 198 kilometres northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Tremors were felt in the Sangihe Islands at an intensity of III to IV MMI, where vibrations were distinctly felt indoors, akin to a passing truck. In Manado, South Minahasa, and Minahasa, the shaking was felt at an intensity of II to III MMI, causing light hanging objects to sway. Although the earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk, the BMKG advised the public to remain alert for potential aftershocks and to follow guidance from local authorities.
