A magnitude 6.0 earthquake rattled Hawaii, United States, on Friday night local time. There was no tsunami warning issued in the aftermath of the quake.

A report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), as reported by AFP, Saturday (23 May 2026), noted the tremor was felt strongly in an area about 12 kilometres south of Honaunau-Napoopoo on the island of Hawai’i, Hawai’i’s Big Island, which is the main island of Hawaii.

The epicentre of the strong quake, according to USGS, was at a depth of 22.4 kilometres below the Earth’s surface.

USGS recorded the quake of magnitude M 6 that shook the area on Friday (23 May) night at around 9:46 pm local time.

According to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Centre, there is no tsunami danger posed by the tremor.

So far, there have been no reports of casualties or damage.

Hawaii is seismically active on Earth, though located on the middle of a large tectonic plate.

There are at least six active volcanoes in Hawaii, including Kilauea, which often captivates tourists who take helicopter tours to view the volcano from the air.

Hawaii is also home to Mauna Loa, which is the largest volcano in the world.
