Magnitude 5 Earthquake Shakes Southeast Maluku
A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Southeast Maluku on Thursday (26/2).
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake occurred at approximately 03:04 WIB.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 206 kilometers northwest of Southeast Maluku, at a depth of 12 kilometers.
Although this large earthquake was centered at sea, BMKG stated that it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
“#Earthquake Mag:5.0, 26-Feb-26 03:04:24 WIB, Location: 5.01 LS, 131.00 BT (206 km Northwest of SOUTHEAST MALUKU), Depth: 12 Km, no tsunami potential #BMKG,” read the BMKG notification on X.
The results of BMKG’s analysis showed that this earthquake had updated parameters with a magnitude of M4.9. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 5.13° S; 131.02° E, or precisely located at sea, 206 km northwest of Southeast Maluku, at a depth of 12 km.
“As of this moment, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake. The modeling results show that this earthquake DOES NOT HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR A TSUNAMI,” said a BMKG statement.
At the same time, several earthquakes also struck other parts of central and eastern Indonesia.
A magnitude 2.5 earthquake struck Kodi Sumba Barat Daya, East Nusa Tenggara.
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake also struck Tambrauw, West Papua, at around 03:38 WIB.
