Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes West Halmahera, No Tsunami Threat

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude 5.6 earthquake that shook the northwest region of West Halmahera, North Maluku, in the early hours of Wednesday. Based on data released by the BMKG, the earthquake occurred at 03:16:38 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The epicentre was located at coordinates 1.60 degrees North Latitude and 126.59 degrees East Longitude. The quake’s centre was detected at sea, approximately 114 kilometres northwest of West Halmahera, at a depth of 25 kilometres. Despite the significant magnitude, the BMKG confirmed that the tremor had no potential to generate a tsunami. As of the time of reporting, there were no official reports regarding building damage or casualties resulting from the shaking. The public has been advised to remain calm, follow directives from the relevant authorities, and not be swayed by irresponsible rumours. Geographically, Indonesia is a region highly prone to seismic activity. This is due to the country’s position at the meeting point of several major tectonic plates, namely the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Pacific plates.
