Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Shakes Enggano, Bengkulu on Sunday Night

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 shook the southeast of Enggano, Bengkulu, on Sunday at 10.15 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. The epicentre was located at sea, 84 kilometres southeast of Enggano, at coordinates 5.92 degrees south latitude and 102.77 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 40 kilometres. BMKG stated that the earthquake did not have the potential to generate a tsunami. As of now, there have been no reports of damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake. BMKG noted that the data prioritises speed, and therefore the processing results may still change as more data becomes available. Indonesia is a country prone to earthquakes because it lies at the meeting point of several major tectonic plates, including the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Pacific plates.
