A magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook waters 57 km northeast of Pulau Puah, Central Sulawesi, in the early hours of Sunday local time. According to an official post on X by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred on Sunday (23/8) at 03.57 WITA. The quake was centred at coordinates 0.30 degrees South Latitude and 123.06 degrees East Longitude, at a depth of 86 km, and did not pose a tsunami risk. Tremors were felt as far as Luwuk, Gorontalo and Bone Bolango Regency. Earlier, at 03.54 WITA, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck waters 93 km from Bonebolango, Gorontalo, centred at the same coordinates and depth.
