Magnitude 5.3 Earthquake Hits Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, on Monday at approximately 21:53 WIB (22:53 WIT). The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated via its official website that the earthquake, which affected the Tahuna District, was located at coordinates 5.65 degrees North latitude and 124.80 degrees East longitude.

According to the data, the epicentre was situated approximately 239 kilometres from Tahuna, with a depth of 10 kilometres. The BMKG noted that the initial data prioritised speed, meaning the processed results are not yet stable and may change as more complete data becomes available.

Furthermore, the BMKG confirmed that the earthquake does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. As of now, the agency has not reported detailed information regarding the cause of the earthquake or its specific impact on the local community. Residents are advised to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information until a comprehensive analysis is officially released by the BMKG.
