Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake off South Coast of Sukabumi Does Not Trigger Tsunami

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook the southern coast of Sukabumi, West Java, on Sunday (19/7/2026) at 15.11 WIB. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami.

BMKG’s Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Wujayanto, stated that the analysis results showed the earthquake had updated parameters with a magnitude of 4.8 at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was located in the sea, 79 kilometres southwest of Sukabumi Regency, West Java.

“The tsunami modelling results show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

He explained that, considering the epicentre location and hypocentre depth, the earthquake was a shallow type caused by rock deformation activity on the seabed. The source mechanism analysis indicated the earthquake had an oblique-thrust fault movement mechanism.

Based on the shakemap intensity estimates, the earthquake was felt at an intensity scale of III MMI in the areas of Cikotok, Kalapanunggal, Cidolog, Cisaat, Simpenan, Sukabumi City, Nagrak, Panggarangan, Cimahi, Banjaran, Lembang, Parompong, Cililin, Sariwangi, Katapang, Bandung, Cianjur, Ciwidey, Ciawi, Cikole, and Pelabuhan Ratu. The shaking was felt by many people indoors and by a few people outdoors, with reports of broken pottery, creaking windows and doors, and rattling walls.
