Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Shakes Southern Coast of West Java, Felt in Bandung

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook the southern coastal region of Sukabumi, West Java, on Sunday (19/7/2026) at around 15.11 WIB. The earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

“BMKG analysis results show this earthquake has updated parameters with a magnitude of 4.8 and a depth of 52 kilometres. This earthquake has no tsunami potential,” said BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Wijayanto, via an official statement received on Sunday (19/7/2026).

He explained that tsunami modelling results indicated the earthquake had no tsunami potential. The earthquake was a shallow type caused by rock deformation activity on the seabed.

Wijayanto added that source mechanism analysis showed the earthquake had an oblique-thrust movement mechanism. The earthquake was felt by people indoors, and outdoors by some people, with windows and doors rattling and walls making sounds.
