An earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 4.1 struck Sukabumi with tremors felt as far as Cianjur, West Java, causing numerous residents to panic and flee their homes.

According to data posted on X by the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred at 00:36 Western Indonesia Standard Time on Sunday, 15 March 2026. The earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometres below the surface.

Muhammad Faisal, 20, a resident, said the earthquake felt extremely strong and lasted approximately three seconds. He even heard a loud rumbling sound.

“We felt the shaking very strongly, and there was a rumbling noise too,” he said on Sunday, 15 March 2026.

According to him, residents who were in cafés in the KH Abdullah bin Nuh Road area ran to the car park out of concern that buildings might collapse.

“We ran to the car park and open ground. Because the roof was also rumbling. We were afraid it would collapse,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cianjur Regency’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) secretary, Asep Sudrajat, said his office was still gathering information regarding the earthquake’s impact.

He stated that four districts were being intensively monitored, specifically those bordering Sukabumi City.

“We are still waiting for reports on whether there are any areas affected, particularly in Gekbrong, Warungkondang, Campaka, and Takokak districts. These border directly with the epicentre,” he concluded.
