The Special Region of Yogyakarta remains a favourite holiday destination for tourists during the school break. To accommodate the increased mobility of families travelling by train, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 6 Yogyakarta has introduced a Schooliday programme at Yogyakarta Station, inviting young passengers to play, create, and take home their own handiwork. Children are encouraged to enjoy their waiting time so they do not feel bored during their holiday journeys.

Observations at the station revealed a more festive atmosphere. Dozens of children were seen enthusiastically participating in mug painting activities, while others were entertained by a magician specially brought in by KAI to accompany them while waiting for train departures.

Manager of Public Relations for KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Feni Novida Saragih, stated on Monday that the Schooliday programme was launched to welcome the school holiday period, which runs from 20 June to 5 July. She added that KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta would present various interesting events at stations, particularly at Yogyakarta and Lempuyangan stations.

Mug painting has become one of the children’s favourite activities. In each session, the company provides around 30 to 50 mugs that can be decorated according to each participant’s creativity. The finished mugs are allowed to be taken home as souvenirs from their journey.

Feni explained that the activity was deliberately designed to prevent children from feeling restless while at the station. Although KAI has long provided children’s play areas, the addition of creative activities and interactive entertainment is considered to make the waiting experience more enjoyable. The response has been positive from both children and parents, with the magic show also providing a new, entertaining experience during the school holiday period.
