Madrasah Teachers Demonstrate Outside the Indonesian Parliament, Call for Changes to the ASN Law
Jakarta, KOMPAS.com - A group of volunteer madrasah teachers from various regions staged a demonstration in front of the DPR/MPR Building, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (20 May 2026) at 13:00 WIB. Based on information compiled by Kompas.com from several madrasah teachers taking part, the demonstration would begin after the Dzuhur prayer, aligning with the plenary session schedule of the DPR/MPR RI which has been in session since 09:30 WIB today. The teachers were seen standing and sitting in groups from 11:30 WIB. Meanwhile, several buses carrying the teachers were parked near Gates 5 and 8 GBK. By 12:05 WIB, the group of volunteer madrasah teachers remained gathered around Gate 10 GBK. Not far away, a group of workers was delivering a speech in front of Gate 10 GBK. At 12:27 WIB, the presidential convoy, which had just left the DPR/MPR complex, passed along Jalan Gerbang Pemuda near Gate 10 GBK. The President, wearing a full suit and a peci, waved to the group of teachers and workers who greeted with waves of their own. After the convoy had passed, the group of madrasah teachers moved on foot to the main gate of the DPR/MPR RI, Jalan Gatot Subroto, Senayan. One teacher, Irwan (42), said the protesters’ demand was to oppose the regulations in the ASN Law No. 20 of 2023. He called for private school teachers at madrasahs to be appointed as ASN or PPPK. “So far we have had no opportunity to compete with teachers who have state status. Even when we apply for PPPK, we reach a dead end due to age,” he said.
