Madrasah teachers and online motorcycle taxi drivers protest in front of the DPR, Gatot Subroto traffic toward Slipi largely smooth

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Hundreds of private madrasah teachers staged a demonstration in front of the main gate of the DPR/MPR RI building in Central Jakarta, alongside demonstrators from online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

As observed by Kompas.com at 15:05 WIB, the demonstration was ongoing.

The crowds from both groups were seen seated and standing in front of the gates, reaching about halfway along Gatot Subroto Road (South Jakarta) toward Slipi (West Jakarta).

In response, dozens of police officers were stationed along the roadside to manage traffic.

As a result, two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles, as well as public transport, could continue to move smoothly.

However, long-distance coaches, Transjakarta buses and trucks appeared to move slowly as they passed the demonstration site to avoid clashes with other vehicles or with the teachers’ crowd or the ojol crowd.

Meanwhile, the ojol drivers’ demonstration began at 14:07 WIB.

The two groups took turns delivering speeches.

One of the demands from the ojol drivers was welfare and legal protection for their employment status.

Around 14:30 WIB, eight representatives of the madrasah teachers’ organisations were received by Commission VIII of the DPR RI.

As of this report, the teachers had not yet concluded their meeting with Commission VIII.
