Madiun’s suspended mayor, Maidi, has been sentenced to five years in prison in a corruption case involving extortion disguised as corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds and the acceptance of gratuities within the Madiun municipal government.

The Surabaya Corruption Court panel also fined Maidi Rp250 million. Presiding judge Ernawati Anwar read out the verdict at a hearing in Surabaya on Thursday.

“The defendant, Maidi, is legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing corruption jointly and on a continuing basis,” the judge said when reading the verdict.

The prison sentence is two years and two months shorter than the sentence sought by prosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), who asked for Maidi to be jailed for seven years and two months at a hearing on 17 September 2026.

The panel imposed a Rp250 million fine, to be replaced by three months’ imprisonment if it is not paid. The period Maidi has already spent in detention will be deducted from his sentence, and he has been ordered to remain in custody.

The KPK prosecutors had also demanded that Maidi pay compensation of Rp8,005,384,790, or around Rp8 billion.

If he failed to meet that obligation, prosecutors asked for his assets to be seized and auctioned. If the proceeds were insufficient, they sought a substitute prison term of five years.

The case concerns alleged extortion disguised as CSR funds and the receipt of gratuities linked to several projects in the Madiun municipal government, including projects run by the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR) and the Winongo final waste-processing site.

In their closing arguments, prosecutors linked the case to an amount of Rp10.7 billion.
