Macron Urges Swift US-Iran Agreement as Strait of Hormuz Reopens
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an immediate US-Iran agreement to end the conflict that has raged since late February. Macron stressed that the current opportunity for de-escalation must be seized promptly.
Macron’s appeal, reported by Press TV and AFP on Monday (1 June 2026), was made via a social media post on X on Sunday (31 May) following phone conversations with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
“Extremely important that a US-Iran agreement is reached swiftly. This opportunity must be seized now,” Macron said in his message to Middle Eastern leaders, as stated in his declaration.
“Priority must be given to achieving an immediate ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz without any preconditions and in line with international law,” he stated.
Macron added that after a ceasefire and the Strait of Hormuz’s reopening are agreed upon, discussions must continue to achieve a “comprehensive and robust” agreement on other issues, including nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and regional stability.
The French president also stated his country’s willingness to contribute actively, including through an independent multinational maritime mission to ensure safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as providing expertise in nuclear negotiations and assisting in building a regional security framework.
Regarding Lebanon, Macron stated, “There is no justification for the current large-scale escalation in southern Lebanon.” He called for all fighting to be halted “permanently”.
“France will continue to support Lebanon’s government in its efforts to restore the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he stressed.
Macron has urged President Trump to secure a ceasefire with Iran.
In a recent social media post on X on Monday (1 June), Macron said he had urged US President Donald Trump to continue “firm efforts” to achieve a ceasefire agreement with Iran to end the Middle East conflict.
“I welcome his firm efforts to swiftly reach a US-Iran agreement, a unique opportunity to build a new security framework uniting all stakeholders to enable sustainable regional stabilisation,” Macron said, referring to his phone call with Trump on Sunday (31 May) evening.
Iran has stated that a ceasefire in Lebanon remains a key condition for any agreement with the US, particularly after Israeli forces seized a historic fortress in southern Lebanon during a ground operation against Hezbollah.
“I also welcome President Trump’s commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and underscore the importance of a strong ceasefire and collective support for Lebanese authorities,” Macron added.
