Istanbul (ANTARA) - French President Emmanuel Macron stated that he and US President Donald Trump discussed diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, increase shipping traffic through the route, and ease tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking after their meeting in New York on Monday, Macron said the two leaders also discussed securing oil routes in the Red Sea without escalating tensions, as well as support for Ukraine and efforts to address energy issues within the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He stated there is a shared desire to “make every effort to reopen (…) Hormuz” and to “restore the flow” of shipping.

The two leaders also discussed the need to assist Ukraine in a faster and more robust manner through the provision of interceptor missiles for defence.

They also revisited initiatives that could be undertaken to achieve a moratorium regarding energy issues.

Macron noted that he is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with further talks between the United States and Ukraine scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
