Macron Accused of Double Standards by Iran, Here's the Evidence
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, on Thursday (19/3), criticised French President Emmanuel Macron for failing to react to attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure amid escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel.
Macron had previously stated on social media that he had spoken with US President Donald Trump and Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani regarding Iran’s attack on gas facilities in Qatar.
He called for a ban on attacks against civilian infrastructure. However, Araghchi deemed Macron’s stance inconsistent.
“Macron has not uttered a single word to condemn the Israel-US war against Iran. He also did not condemn Israel when it blew up a fuel tank in Tehran, endangering millions of people. His concern only arises now after Iran retaliates. Sad!” he wrote on platform X.
On Wednesday, Qatar’s state-owned energy company QatarEnergy reported a missile attack and fire in the Ras Laffan industrial area in the north of the country, which is the site of Qatar’s largest liquefied natural gas production complex.
Iran had previously warned that it would target energy infrastructure in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates in retaliation for Israeli and US attacks on the South Pars gas field.
On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties.
Iran then retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East region. Initially, the US and Israel described the attacks as “preemptive” measures against threats from Iran’s nuclear programme. However, both later expressed a desire to see a change of power in Iran.
