Machete Attack on Two Police Officers in Jambi Deemed a Serious Threat to the Rule of Law

A member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Nasyirul Falah Amru, has asserted that the machete attack on two members of the Jambi Police Traffic Unit (Satlantas Polresta Jambi) constitutes an act that threatens the upholding of the rule of law in Indonesia. The officers were attacked while on duty managing traffic flow in the Angso Duo Market area on Monday morning (22/6).

According to the politician, familiarly known as Gus Falah, police officers carrying out state duties must receive full legal protection. An attack on officers performing their obligations is not merely an attack on individuals, but also a form of resistance against state authority and the law enforcement system.

"This incident is an attack on state apparatus who were carrying out their duties lawfully. If such actions are tolerated, it could trigger the collapse of the rule of law and diminish the state’s authority in the eyes of the public," Gus Falah stressed in a written statement on Thursday (25/6).

He assessed that the perpetrators must be processed firmly using the provisions of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP), which has been in effect since January 2026. Under Article 348 of the KUHP, any person who uses violence or the threat of violence against an official performing lawful duties can be sentenced to a maximum of two years in prison or a fine in accordance with applicable regulations.

Furthermore, Gus Falah explained that if the attack was carried out jointly and resulted in injuries to the victims, the perpetrators could be charged with heavier provisions as stipulated in Article 349 and Article 350 of the KUHP. Therefore, law enforcement officials are urged to investigate the case thoroughly, including uncovering all parties involved and the motive behind the attack.

"The state must not be defeated by criminal acts that attack officers performing their duties. Law enforcement must be carried out firmly to provide a deterrent effect and serve as a warning to anyone who tries to resist officers with violence," said Gus Falah.

As is known, two members of the Jambi Police Traffic Unit were victims of a machete attack while on duty managing traffic in the Angso Duo Market area, Jambi City. The incident has drawn public attention and garnered condemnation from various circles as it is considered a direct attack on law enforcement officers carrying out state duties.
