A magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook the Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi, on Tuesday (9/6) at 17.07 WIB. The epicentre was located at sea, approximately 292 kilometres northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands, with a hypocentre at a depth of 10 kilometres. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that modelling results show the earthquake has no tsunami potential. ‘Based on the estimated shakemap, this earthquake was felt at an intensity scale of III MMI in the Marore Islands, Sangihe; Miangas, Talaud Islands; and Kendahe, Sangihe Islands,’ said BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis Wijayanto in an official statement on Tuesday evening. He explained that, taking into account the epicentre location and hypocentre depth, the earthquake was a shallow quake resulting from plate subduction activity. ‘Source mechanism analysis indicates the earthquake has an oblique thrust fault movement,’ he said. Wijayanto noted that there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake so far. He further explained that the earthquake is part of a series of aftershocks from the M7.7 earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines, yesterday, Tuesday (8/6), at 06.37. ‘As of 9 June 2026, at 14.00 WIB, BMKG monitoring results show 152 aftershock activities, with the largest magnitude being M6.7,’ he stated.
