A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of M5.6 struck the southern region of Bayah, Banten, on Monday (14/09/2026) at 16:27:40 WIB.

“The results of BMKG analysis show that this earthquake has updated parameters with a magnitude of M5.5 at a depth of 31 km. The epicentre of the earthquake is located at coordinates 8.56° S; 105.70° E, specifically in the sea at a distance of 191 km southwest of Bayah, Banten,” said the Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, Wijayanto, in an official statement.

“Tsunami modelling results indicate that this earthquake DOES NOT HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR A TSUNAMI,” he added.

He explained that, based on the estimated shakemap, the earthquake was felt at an intensity scale of II MMI. This means the vibrations were felt by some people, and light hanging objects swayed in Pandeglang.

“As of 16:50 WIB, BMKG monitoring results show no aftershock activity,” he stated.

BMKG, he continued, will continue to monitor aftershock activity and provide information updates to stakeholders and the public.

The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified information. Furthermore, people are advised to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged as a result of the earthquake.

“Ensure that official information is sourced only from BMKG, which is disseminated through verified official communication channels such as the @infoBMKG social media account and the BMKG website,” he emphasised.
