M5.1 earthquake strikes Jember Tuesday afternoon with no tsunami threat

A tectonic earthquake occurred at 15:39 WIB in the southeast region of Jember, East Java, according to Malang Geophysical Station Chief Ricko Kardoso. BMKG analysis showed the quake had an updated magnitude of 4.8, with its epicentre located at 9.07 degrees south latitude and 113.82 degrees east longitude, 99 kilometres southeast of Jember at a depth of 14 kilometres. Ricko explained the shallow earthquake resulted from rock deformation within the tectonic plate. The tremor was felt in Jember at intensity IV on the MMI scale, Banyuwangi at III-IV, and Bondowoso, Kuta, South Kuta and Malang at III. Denpasar recorded intensities of II-III, while Blitar and Trenggalek reported II. As of 15:55 WIB, BMKG monitoring showed no aftershocks. Several residents at Graha Citra Mas housing estate rushed out of their homes due to the strong shaking. “The shaking was strong, so I ran out of my house,” said Fitri, a resident.
