M4.3 Earthquake Hits Cianjur

On Tuesday, 1 September 2026, at 17:53 WIB, the Cianjur Regency area in West Java and its surroundings were shaken by a tectonic earthquake. Analysis from the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency) shows an updated magnitude of M4.3.

“The epicentre of the earthquake was located at coordinates 6.91 LS and 107.10 BT, specifically on land 10 km Southwest of Cianjur Regency, West Java, at a depth of 4 km,” stated Hartanto, Head of BMKG Region II South Tangerang, in his statement on Tuesday.

Considering the location of the epicentre and the depth of the hypocentre, the earthquake was a shallow type resulting from active fault activity.

Based on reports from the community, the earthquake was felt in the Cianjur area with an Intensity Scale of III - IV MMI (perceivable by many people in houses during the day); in the areas of Sukabumi City, Cibadak, Nagrak, Warung Kondang, Cimahi, and Cilaku with an Intensity Scale of II - III MMI (vibrations clearly felt in houses, similar to a passing truck); and in Bandung City, Cibubur, and Sukaraja with an Intensity Scale of II MMI (vibrations felt by some people, with light hanging objects swaying).

“However, up to this point, there have been no reports regarding building damage as a result of the earthquake,” he added.

As of 18:15 WIB, BMKG monitoring has not shown any aftershock activity. The Cianjur Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has urged residents to remain calm but vigilant following the M4.3 earthquake on Tuesday. Officials are still surveying the field for any potential damage.
